The Finland-flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel Norstream safely arrived at the port of Tilbury after spending nearly two days disabled in the southern North Sea following an engine failure and a funnel fire during its voyage from Rotterdam. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred on 23 June, shortly after the vessel departed from Rotterdam en route to Tilbury. A turbocharger failure caused one of the vessel's two main engines to break down, leaving it operating on a single engine. The mechanical failure was subsequently followed by a fire in the funnel, which was quickly brought under control by the crew.
As a result of the incident, the vessel was unable to continue the voyage and drifted in the North Sea before taking shelter in an anchorage approximately 10 nautical miles north of Margate, off the southeast coast of England. The vessel then resumed its voyage and safely arrived at Tilbury on 25 June.
Norstream is a 1999-built Ro-Ro cargo vessel chartered by P&O Ferries from the Finnish shipping company Bore Ltd. The vessel measures 180 meters in length and 25.5 meters in width.
