The International Maritime Organization, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the International Chamber of Shipping presented a revised version of the maritime rescue guide aimed at strengthening the protection of human life at sea. The Guide was presented during an event held at the IMO headquarters in London, United Kingdom, on May 19, in response to the increase in rescue operations on international maritime routes and the need to reinforce the shipping sector's action protocols.
The document incorporates updated guidelines on rescue coordination, safe disembarkation of assisted persons, and compliance with international obligations under the SOLAS Convention and other maritime regulatory frameworks. Likewise, the guide emphasizes cooperation between States, rescue coordination centers, and shipping companies to ensure efficient and safe responses during SAR operations, reducing operational risks and strengthening the response capacity of the international maritime sector.
The revision of this guide represents a significant advance for maritime safety and the international governance of maritime transport, by promoting more coordinated and efficient operational standards in emergency scenarios. Furthermore, its implementation could contribute to strengthening the resilience of trade routes, optimizing port security protocols, and reinforcing international cooperation in the protection of human life within global maritime transport chains.
