The Grimaldi Group has strengthened its fleet with the delivery of Grande Oriente, the twelfth ammonia-ready vehicle carrier in its next-generation series, on 30 June. The delivery forms part of the Italian shipping company's ongoing fleet modernisation programme aimed at improving efficiency and reducing emissions.
Built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu, the Italian-flagged vessel is designed for future conversion to operate on ammonia as a zero-carbon alternative fuel and can transport up to 9,000 cars, including both conventionally powered vehicles and electric vehicles.
The 220-meter-long vessel has been awarded the ammonia-ready notation by the Italian Shipping Register (RINA), certifying that it can be converted to operate on ammonia in the future.
According to the company, the newbuild can reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% compared with earlier-generation car carriers through a range of advanced energy-efficiency technologies.
The vessel is to begin commercial operations on the Asia–Europe service, scheduled to depart from Taicang, China, for Portbury, United Kingdom. In this maiden voyage, the vessel will transport more than 6,200 cars and 700 linear metres of rolling cargo.
