ABB won a contract with Cochin Shipyard to supply power and propulsion systems for two electric tugboats, with an estimated delivery date to Polestar Maritime in 2027, as part of Phase 1 of India's Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP).
The vessels will operate from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India's largest container port, which accounts for approximately 50% of the total containerized cargo volume at the country's major ports.
The GTTP aims to transition India's port tugboat fleet from conventional diesel-powered vessels to greener alternatives in five phases, from 2024 to 2040.
With comprehensive electricity, propulsion, automation, and digitalization solutions, ABB's supply will ensure the efficient and reliable operation of the electric tugboats, aligning with the overall objectives of the GTTP and contributing to JNPA's efforts to achieve "Green Port" certification.
ABB's Onboard DC Grid power system platform and PEMS energy management system will form the core of the combined propulsion and power solution, enabling the vessels to optimize the use of onboard batteries to meet wide variations in power demand. The modular and highly customizable system not only facilitates the integration of energy storage systems but also optimizes drivetrain efficiency and extends the range per battery charge.
Additionally, the ABB Ability remote diagnostic system for marine applications, part of the same scope, will help keep the electric tugboats running reliably and efficiently through condition monitoring and remote troubleshooting.
"The integration of electric propulsion and advanced automation into port tugboats is a complex engineering task, and selecting the right technology partner was critical. ABB's proven systems and extensive experience in this sector made them the obvious choice. We are building these vessels to be durable, high-performing, and to demonstrate that Indian shipyards are ready to lead the green transition of the sector," said Shri Jose VJ, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited.
"India's Green Tug Transition Program represents a decisive step the country has taken to reduce emissions from port operations. Being selected to supply the electrical, propulsion, and automation systems for JNPA and Cochin Shipyard's first electric tugboats, under India's GTTP program, reflects the confidence the Indian maritime sector has placed in ABB's technology and our long track record in marine electrification," stated Rune Braastad, President of ABB's Marine & Ports Division.
With over 75 years of experience in the Indian market, ABB's latest collaboration with Cochin Shipyard involved providing power, propulsion, and automation systems for two hydrogen-powered container vessels for Samskip Group. Furthermore, it has significantly contributed to the electrification of the short-sea shipping segment in Asia, supplying technology for fully electric vessels to operators in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan.
