A fire broke out aboard the Bangladesh-flagged crude oil tanker Meghna Trader while anchored off the Chattogram Port's outer anchorage on 28 May, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving port, navy, and coast guard authorities. No injuries among the 22 crewmembers were reported.
At around 7:30 am local time, the fire erupted in the engine room of the tanker, partially laden and en route from Dumai, Indonesia. Crew members aboard the vessel immediately evacuated the engine room and activated the vessel's CO₂ firefighting system to contain the blaze.
The Chittagong Port Authority dispatched tugboats Kandari 3 and Kandari 11, while the Bangladesh Coast Guard deployed tug Promotto. The Bangladesh Navy also sent tug BNT Sebok to assist the firefighting operation.
After hours of firefighting, the blaze was successfully brought under control at 11:30 am. Authorities and the vessel's local shipping agent remained at the scene to monitor the situation, while investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
