A fire broke out aboard the Netherlands-flagged cargo vessel Jolyn docked at Grevenhofkai in the Kuhwerderhafen section of the port of Hamburg resulted in serious injuries to eight individuals.
In the afternoon of 24 May, the blaze erupted in the vessel's storage area, with heavy smoke later observed rising from the stern, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Crew members had already begun firefighting efforts before 80 firefighters arrived at the scene and battled the blaze for nearly three hours. The fireboat was also deployed, while fire department divers provided additional safety support during the operation.
Seven crew members and one firefighter sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital. Authorities later confirmed that the injured crew members had since been discharged, while the vessel remained secured at the port.
Police stated that asbestos may have been released during the incident, and the vessel can currently only be boarded using respiratory protection equipment. A sailing ban has been imposed on the ship as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
