Four containers fell from the Singapore-flagged container vessel Cosco Hope during cargo handling operations at the Antwerp Gateway Terminal in the Port of Antwerp on 9 June resulted in damaging a bunkering vessel.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time at the DP World-operated terminal. According to reports, the containers fell overboard during loading or unloading operations and landed on a bunker vessel Mati berthed next to the containership. The bunker vessel sustained damage and a minor oil pollution was observed. No injuries were reported.
Emergency efforts were initiated at the terminal while the port operation remained unaffected. Following the incident, Cosco Hope departed Antwerp and subsequently arrived in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The cause of the incident is yet to be determined by the authorities.
