The main association of the Russian grain sector warned that Ukrainian drone attacks against Russian ships and ports could paralyze grain shipments through the Black Sea in the near future, which would raise prices and cause famine in Africa and the Middle East.
Russia, the world's largest wheat exporter, and Ukraine, also a major player in the agricultural sector, have intensified mutual aggressions in recent weeks against facilities that mobilize food and commercial vessels in the Black Sea region.
The Russian Union of Grain Exporters and Producers told Reuters that the consequences of the attacks will be felt in numerous countries in the near future.
"The systematic attacks that began in July could soon lead to a total blockade of export corridors in the Black Sea basin," the union stated in a statement sent to the agency.
The organization noted that the deficit in the supply of Russian wheat to other countries during this season could reach between 30 and 35 million metric tons, representing about 15% of the global trade of this cereal.
It also warned that it will not be possible to cover this shortage by increasing exports from alternative countries.
"Disruptions to maritime traffic in the Black Sea caused by Ukrainian attacks against cargo ships and ports pose a direct threat to global food security," the organization affirmed.
