An official visit to Chile by Laurent Szymkowiak, a representative of the World Customs Organization (WCO), began with a protocol meeting led by the National Director of Customs, Alejandra Arriaza, and the Regional Director of Metropolitan Customs, Rodrigo Díaz. The work agenda includes activities in Valparaíso and Los Andes, including meetings with authorities and specialized officials, visits to operational facilities, and demonstrations of various institutional capabilities related to customs control, non-intrusive inspection, substance analysis, and the work of canine units.
The visit is part of the cooperation relationship that the National Customs Service has maintained for years with the World Customs Organization and includes a series of technical exchange activities aimed at sharing experiences, best practices, and institutional capabilities in matters of inspection, goods control, risk analysis, international cooperation, and inter-institutional coordination, in addition to the technical and technological capabilities that support the fulfillment of its functions.
During the first day, the WCO representative held meetings with specialized teams and toured operational facilities of the Metropolitan Customs, where he learned about different processes associated with traveler and shipment control, as well as tools used in inspection and customs management tasks.
Director Arriaza highlighted that "for the National Customs Service, it is very relevant to once again receive a visit from representatives of the World Customs Organization, an organization with which we maintain a close working relationship and cooperation. These instances allow us to exchange experiences and best practices in matters of inspection, risk management, and inter-institutional coordination, contributing to the strengthening of customs capabilities in the face of foreign trade challenges and the protection of logistics chains."
Scheduled activities include tours of operational areas, presentations by specialized teams, and meetings with representatives of institutions that participate in coordination instances related to security and goods control.
The visit is part of the cooperation and technical exchange instances that the World Customs Organization maintains with its member administrations. In this context, the agenda includes the exchange of experiences on operational capabilities, inter-institutional coordination, customs control, information exchange, and other initiatives promoted by the National Customs Service to face the challenges of foreign trade and the security of logistics chains.
