The Government of the Philippines reported that it continues to work with Belgium to deepen their bilateral relations. Specifically, they are looking to strengthen ties in maritime and energy activities.
This information was confirmed by Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro, who held a joint press conference with Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot, as the latter was visiting the archipelago.
Regarding maritime cooperation, it was announced that "the aim is to leverage the enormous potential to expand collaboration in education, port development, logistics, dredging, coastal protection, maritime security, and the welfare of seafarers."
In this regard, Minister Prévot stated that "the Philippines is a like-minded partner, a country with whom we share a commitment to international law, open markets, multilateralism, and a rules-based international order."
"We are currently living in difficult times, and that is why it is important to strengthen ties between like-minded partners and continue to strongly advocate for respect for a rules-based order," affirmed the Secretary of State.
During the event, Prévot assured that he would push for the initiation of talks to establish a Free Trade Agreement between the Asian nation and the European Union.
Finally, it was announced that both authorities convened a bilateral meeting and agreed to accelerate the full implementation of the Philippines-Belgium Joint Action Plan 2023-2027.
