Two tankers dedicated to fuel transport were attacked on Monday, June 6, by projectile impacts in and around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important commercial shipping routes, according to a report from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency.
In line with the information provided, both vessels sustained material damage. Furthermore, authorities reported no injuries or environmental damage from fuel spills.
The first incident occurred on Monday night, approximately 15 kilometers off the coast of Limah, Oman. A vessel traveling southbound reported being struck on its port side by a projectile of unknown origin, which caused a fire on board that was successfully brought under control.
Shortly after, UKMTO received an alert about a second attack, this time within the Strait of Hormuz itself. Another merchant vessel was hit by an unidentified projectile, sustaining visible damage to its structure.
International naval authorities have already launched a formal investigation to determine who was responsible for these attacks and what type of weapons were used.
Meanwhile, an alert has been issued for all civilian vessels navigating the area to proceed with extreme caution and immediately report any suspicious activity.
