The Regional Ministerial Secretariat of Health of Bio Bio (Seremi) lifted the quarantine for the NV Athena vessel, after confirming the cause of death of the Vietnamese merchant sailor who was traveling aboard the aforementioned ship. Specifically, the agency indicated that the victim died of malaria, a disease that does not pose a risk of contagion to the rest of the crew.
The information was confirmed by the Seremi of Health, Isabel Rojas, who assured that "the results of the samples from the Vietnamese citizen sent to the Public Health Institute confirm a diagnosis of malaria, and, considering that this disease is primarily transmitted by the bite of Anopheles mosquitoes infected with the Plasmodium parasite, which is not present in the Bio Bío region."
Furthermore, the regional authority added that "it was determined that there is no risk to the crew, and the vessel's free pratique is being lifted for its continuation to the next port."
It should be recalled that on Wednesday, July 29, the local entity confirmed the death of the crew member after he was admitted to the Las Higueras Hospital in Talcahuano on Sunday, July 26, with a case of hemorrhagic fever.
As of the close of this report and according to maritime tracking sites, the NV Athena remains in Talcahuano Bay.
On the other hand, PortalPortuario consulted the Seremi of Health regarding the mechanism for repatriating the body of the deceased crew member, receiving the response that "the responsibility for the processing lies with the Shipping Agency, who must coordinate with the corresponding consulate and process only the authorization for international transfer of corpses with the SEREMI," indicated the regional secretariat.
