Dutch shipbuilder Concordia Damen completed delivery of Century Star to Century Cruises, representing the China-based operator's first vessel purpose-built for European river cruise operations.
The delivery initiates a series of three sister ships and establishes Century Cruises' presence in the European market. Century Star is scheduled to commence Danube operations in September, with Rhine itineraries planned for subsequent deployment.
The project involved collaboration with United Waterways, which provided support for Century Cruises' adaptation to European operational requirements including regulatory compliance, safety management systems, crew operations and hospitality standards.
Century Star utilises Concordia Damen's CDS River Cruise 135 design, accommodating 174 passengers across 78 cabins.
The vessel incorporates sustainability elements including hybrid propulsion systems and a hull constructed from recycled steel materials. Interior design combines European river destination influences with Asian heritage references, targeting integration of Eastern hospitality approaches with European passenger expectations.
Chris Kornet, MD of Concordia Damen, stated: "The delivery of Century Star demonstrates that as a family-run business, we are capable of entering an entirely new segment in collaboration with international partners."
He added: "We are grateful to Century Cruises and United Waterways for their confidence in this first project of a series of three. It proves that Dutch shipbuilding expertise and sustainable innovation make a difference in the international river cruise market too."
The second vessel in the three-ship series is scheduled for delivery by Concordia Damen in August, supporting Century Cruises' long-term European market strategy.
Thomas Rooch, MD of Century One in Basel, commented: "The delivery of Century Star is a significant milestone, not only for Century Cruises but for the European river cruise sector as a whole.
"The ship embodies the combination of the drive for innovation and expertise of all parties involved, as well as a shared ambition to offer exceptional travel experiences. We look forward to welcoming the first guests on board."
