Santander, August 7, 2026. Goods traffic at the Port of Santander grew by 0.7% between January and July of this year compared to the same period last year, reaching 4,098,847 tons.
César Díaz, president of the APS, describes these results as “positive” and assures that, by volume, they are “the best in the port's historical series”. However, the most important thing, he emphasizes, is “that they do not respond to an isolated event but to a sustained trend over time that brings the port closer to its next goal of eight million tons.”
This traffic record is largely due to the strong performance of general cargo, which grew by 2.4% during this period, driven by containers and automobiles, and now accounts for 54% of the total traffic operating at the Port of Santander. Díaz assures that this is “another important trend”, as it offers “high added value that directly impacts the economy and employment in Cantabria.”
The head of the Port emphasizes the importance of coordinated work with the port community and the government of Cantabria, in an attitude of continuous listening and search for improvements, so that Cantabria's most important logistics platform - 13.7% of GDP and 11% of employment - “continues to generate more and more activity and progress.”
The president of the APS highlights the “significant effort of the APS in terms of infrastructure, which directly impacts the quality of services provided by the port community.” These include notable works such as the vertical automobile silo, Raos 6, Raos 8, and the urban access to the port.
“Thanks to the resources we generate with our own activity, we have an Investment Plan that foresees public-private actions worth 245 million euros until 2030,” he concludes.
Accumulated Traffic Data January-July 2026
Accumulated traffic in the first seven months of the year reached 4,098,847 tons, representing an increase of 0.7% compared to the same period in 2025.
During this period, general cargo, which represents 54% of the total cargo passing through the port, increased by 2.4%, and liquid bulk by 13.3%, while solid bulk decreased by 2.2%.
The growth in container traffic is noteworthy, reaching 100,264 TEUs -twenty-foot equivalent units-, an 8.6% increase compared to January-July 2025. As for automobiles, with 202,259 units, they exceeded the figure obtained last year by 3.5%.
Meanwhile, cruises, although with 14 calls, the same as in 2025 -but with very positive forecasts-, saw a 10% increase in the number of passengers, rising from 19,733 in 2025 to 21,632 so far this year.
