A test demonstrating the possibilities offered by modern digital technologies for cruise passenger check-in was carried out by AIDA Cruises at Cruise Terminal Hamburg-Steinwerder. The digital passenger check-in for users boarding the AIDAprima cruise ship was tested there for the first time.
Identity verification was performed using identification documents and biometric facial recognition independently at one of the 20 digital check-in terminals. The system streamlines the embarkation process at the terminal and creates an even more comfortable arrival experience for passengers.
The service reduces waiting times, offers greater flexibility, and allows for a relaxed start to the vacation. Passengers can opt for personalized assistance at a traditional counter or receive assistance from the crew during the check-in process. This makes the process faster and more convenient for all guests.
AIDA Cruises developed the new service in collaboration with Lufthansa Industry Solutions over two years. The company, based in Norderstedt, near Hamburg, specializes in IT consulting and system integration.
The transfer of the self-check-in system from the aviation sector to the cruise sector required considering various industry-specific requirements. These included, among others, the integration of printers for boarding passes and connection to the ship's systems.
The boarding pass is RFID-encoded and serves onboard as a payment method and cabin key, among other functions. For security reasons, a recent photograph of each passenger is taken and stored in the ship's system for the duration of the trip.
The system automatically compares the photo taken at the terminal with the image on the identification document using biometric data.
During the current pilot phase at Cruise Terminal Hamburg-Steinwerder, important data is being collected that will be incorporated into future expansion. Based on these findings, AIDA Cruises is evaluating the further use of the technology.
