The Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar) reported that there is no tsunami risk for the Ecuadorian coasts following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake registered in the Philippines on June 7. After conducting the corresponding analyses, the entity confirmed that the characteristics of the seismic event do not meet the necessary conditions to generate maritime disturbances that would affect Ecuador's continental or insular territory.
Inocar's Oceanic Monitoring Center carried out a technical evaluation of the phenomenon and determined that the waves generated by the earthquake do not pose a threat to the Ecuadorian coastal profile. While Philippine authorities continue to address the consequences of the earthquake, which left victims and infrastructure damage, specialized organizations from various Pacific countries have maintained constant monitoring of the evolution of oceanic conditions.
The rapid evaluation and monitoring of these types of events are fundamental for maritime safety and the protection of coastal areas. Permanent vigilance of oceanographic conditions contributes to strengthening early warning systems, ensuring the continuity of port and maritime activities, and providing timely information to sectors linked to maritime transport, fishing, and foreign trade.
