The decision by the Government of Ecuador to eliminate tariffs applied to imports from Colombia marks a significant step towards the normalization of bilateral trade between both countries. The measure strengthens commercial exchange within the Andean Community and contributes to re-establishing more favorable conditions for the flow of industrial goods between two of the main economies in the Andean region.
Representatives of the Colombian productive sector highlighted the positive effects of the measure on exports to Ecuador. Acoplásticos, the guild representing the plastic productive chains in Colombia, noted that the elimination of tariffs will allow for the recovery of shipments of products such as plastic resins, packaging, construction materials, household items, and paints. It also emphasized the importance of maintaining cooperation mechanisms and respect for regional trade agreements to provide greater certainty to businesses.
The reactivation of these commercial flows could translate into an increase in land and maritime cargo movement between Ecuador and Colombia, strengthening regional logistics chains and activities linked to foreign trade. Furthermore, the measure favors Andean economic integration, boosts the competitiveness of industrial sectors, and generates more stable conditions for import, export, and distribution operations of goods in the region.
