Brazil: Infrastructure Investments Increase Bulk Cargo Handling Capacity at the Port of Salvador

The investments made by the Federal Port Authority of Bahia (Codeba) in modernizing the infrastructure of the Port of Salvador are already directly reflected in its operational results. In May 2026, the public pier recorded a historic milestone by exceeding 200,000 tons of imported bulk cargo unloaded, the largest volume registered by the terminal in this segment.

This volume was achieved during operations carried out by Intermarítima, the company responsible for cargo handling. With a record movement of bulk cargo, unprecedented operations with large vessels, and an investment portfolio focused on infrastructure expansion and modernization, the Port of Salvador is advancing to consolidate its position as one of the main logistics hubs in northeastern Brazil and strengthen Bahia's competitiveness in Brazilian maritime trade.

Among the main interventions carried out by Codeba is the recovery and structural reinforcement of the public pier platform, with an investment of R$ 14.7 million. This work is part of a set of improvements that have been expanding the operational capacity of the Port of Salvador, explains Antonio Gobbo, president of Codeba, who also highlights the deepening of the new access channel and the maneuvering basin, currently undergoing licensing.

"This is another strategic action and a fundamental step to expand the handling capacity for vessels with a length of 400 meters, which will be the standard for projects in the coming decades. An intervention that should significantly increase the port's competitiveness in the coming years," concluded Gobbo.

Ongoing investments also include the partial expansion of the public pier to reach a depth of 14 meters, the construction of the new Gate 4 at the Port of Salvador, with an investment exceeding R$ 1.6 million, and the modernization of the medium and low voltage electrical networks of the administrative and operational buildings of the terminal.

In addition to structural improvements, the Federal Port Authority has incorporated initiatives focused on sustainability. Among these, the decarbonization and electrification project for the piers, initiated at the Port of Salvador, stands out, which foresees the installation of electrical supply systems for tugboats responsible for vessel maneuvering.
