DP World Callao activates Latin America's first Shore Power system

DP World Callao has initiated the trial run of its new Shore Power system and completed the first connection of a vessel to the land-based electricity supply, now available at the South Pier of the Port of Callao.

Shore Power allows for the supply of electricity from land to compatible vessels that connect directly to the maritime facility's grid while docked, turning off their auxiliary engines and reducing fossil fuel consumption, polluting emissions, and noise.

As previously reported by PortalPortuario, the implementation of this system has made the South Pier of the Port of Callao the first terminal in Latin America to feature this technology. Its operation will prevent the emission of over 6,300 tons of CO2 equivalent per year and reduce nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide, and particulate matter emissions by more than 90%.

Peru's President, Keiko Fujimori, led the inauguration of this innovation at the port facility. On the occasion, the president stated that "only 3% of the world's ports have this technology, and it fills us with pride that Peru is part of this group, as an example of environmental protection and modernization."

"Today, from here, we are not only moving cargo; we are moving Peru towards the future. We are talking about a technology that may seem simple but has enormous importance," the head of state noted.

In this context, Fujimori emphasized that the technological advancement will have benefits that transcend port activity and will contribute to improving the environmental conditions of Callao and its population.

"Today we celebrate an initiative that demonstrates that economic growth, investment, innovation, and environmental protection are not conflicting objectives. On the contrary, they can and must advance together," she stressed.

Likewise, the Peruvian president highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Callao as the main gateway for Peruvian foreign trade. Currently, the South Pier handles nearly 60% of Callao's container cargo and constitutes a key infrastructure for connecting national production with international markets.

"This is not just a pier; it is one of the doors through which Peruvian work reaches the world. Therefore, modernizing ports also means strengthening our economy, because a modern port moves not just containers, but opportunities," she stated.

In that vein, the head of state remarked that the growth of port infrastructure requires an active relationship between the State and the private sector to boost the country's development.

"Peru needs private investment, it needs innovation, it needs companies that have the capacity and willingness to look beyond the short term. And it also needs a State that supports this effort, that creates conditions for investment, that provides legal certainty, that promotes competition, and that facilitates the incorporation of new technologies," she declared.

Finally, the president reaffirmed from Callao her Government's commitment to a long-term development agenda that allows leveraging technology and investment for the benefit of the country.

During the event, the president was accompanied by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Rafael Rey; DP World's Global Operations Director, Tiemen Meester; and the CEO of DP World Peru and Ecuador, Carlos Merino.
