Port Freeport was awarded an USD 11 million grant from the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) for fiscal year 2025, granted by the U.S. Maritime Administration (Marad) to support critical infrastructure improvements at Velasco Terminal, strengthening cargo handling capabilities and operational efficiency.
"Improving our terminal capabilities positions Port Freeport to operate with greater efficiency, better serve our customers, and capitalize on future growth opportunities that will generate jobs and promote economic development in Brazoria County and beyond. We appreciate the leadership and support of Senator Ted Cruz, Senator John Cornyn, and Congressman Randy Weber in helping to secure these important funds for Port Freeport and the State of Texas," said Rob Giesecke, Chairman of the Port Freeport Commission.
The project will transform approximately 4 hectares into a high-performance cargo handling area, designed to enhance efficiency, safety, and security. Planned improvements include replacing the stabilized limestone surface with high-strength concrete pavement, installing advanced stormwater drainage systems, and incorporating high-mast lighting to support terminal operations.
"These improvements will increase operational throughput at Velasco Terminal by enhancing efficiency and supporting safe and reliable cargo handling. Investments like this allow Port Freeport to continue providing reliable service while adapting to the changing needs of maritime trade," stated Phyllis Saathoff, Executive Director and CEO of Port Freeport.
The PIDP program provides federal funding for projects that improve the movement of goods through U.S. ports.
