The derailment of a freight train near Chiguayante station occurred past five in the morning, when a convoy from the company Fepasa, transporting cellulose to a regional port, saw nine of its cars come off the tracks.
According to information provided by EFE Sur, no injuries were reported as a result of this incident, although the impact on infrastructure and local connectivity has been considerable.
The emergency initially caused a complete blockage of the Santa Sofía railway crossing, which connects Avenida O'Higgins with Manuel Rodríguez, one of the main arteries of the commune. This obstruction lasted for almost four hours until the work of technical teams allowed the removal of unaffected cars using an additional locomotive. However, audiovisual records at the scene show the magnitude of the event, with wagons crossed over the three tracks of the station and evident damage to sleepers and rails.
The incident caused a significant disruption to the operation of the Biotren railway system in the Biobío region. The state-owned company immediately reconfigured its usual routes to mitigate the impact on users.
The causes of this derailment are being investigated by the Railway Accident Investigation Unit (UIAF), whose specialists arrived at the scene to determine the origin of the failure.
In parallel, technical personnel from EFE and Fepasa are working in coordination on the removal of damaged material and the rehabilitation of the track. The company has stated that it will continue to report on the progress of these repair works through its official channels, while the time needed to fully restore operations in the affected area is being evaluated.
