The Investigations Police (PDI), in coordination with the National Customs Service, carried out the seizure of 100 tons of copper at the Port of Iquique after an inspection process.
In line with what was communicated by PDI Tarapacá, the field operation allowed the detection of four containers loaded with the smuggled metal, which were to be sent to China.
"Detectives from the Iquique Robbery Investigation Brigade, in coordination with the National Customs Service, carried out an inspection at the Port of Iquique in order to identify shipments associated with copper smuggling. The field work allowed the detection of 4 containers of copper in different formats, weighing approximately 100 tons," the PDI reported.
"The cargo was seized because the documentation with which it was intended to be sent to China did not match what was actually found by Customs and PDI," it added.
It is worth remembering that in early April 2026, the PDI also participated in an operation that dismantled a criminal organization dedicated to exporting stolen copper to Asian markets. The gang processed the metal to conceal its illicit origin and declare it as scrap metal shipments, managing its exit from the country through the Iquique port facility.
