The President of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell, participated in the inaugural day of the VIII Workshop on Operational Intervention in Technological Risks.
The Port of Barcelona is hosting this week the VIII Workshop on Operational Intervention in Technological Risks, technical workshops for Fire Departments from all over Spain with the aim of sharing common intervention strategies and procedures in port and industrial areas.
The workshops, in which more than 60 professionals, including firefighters and experts, participate, allow attendees to learn, share, and develop advances in interventions associated with risks in industrial environments such as the Port of Barcelona, where the Barcelona Fire Department provides the Civil Protection, Fire Prevention and Extinction, and Rescue Service.
The workshops, which begin today Monday and will conclude the day after tomorrow Wednesday, focus on the implementation of new action models. For this reason, they combine theoretical sessions at the World Trade Center Barcelona with practical demonstrations and drills.
Thus, today the Barcelona Fire Department will carry out a demonstration of maneuvers with large flows, with the collaboration of a Port of Barcelona tugboat, and tomorrow they will participate in a drill at a bulk liquid terminal at the Energy dock.
In both cases, the Barcelona Fire Department thus demonstrates the capacity and effectiveness of the equipment supplied by the Port of Barcelona within the framework of the collaboration agreement between the Fire Department and the Port Authority.
This is the second time the Port of Barcelona has hosted these workshops, which are held every two years.
"Changes in port activity since 2013, when the Port of Barcelona hosted the second edition of the Workshop on Operational Intervention in Technological Risks, mean that we have to adapt our intervention models. Today, these models must include new risks such as alternative fuels - LNG or methanol - or OPS systems for the electrification of docks, to give two examples," explained the Head of Industrial Safety of the Port of Barcelona, Anna Perera.
The President of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell, also highlighted in his welcome to the workshops the need to be prepared and coordinated in the face of risks associated with port activity. "We are a port very linked to the city, open, dynamic, where many activities coexist. This makes coordination with emergency services, especially the Barcelona Fire Department, an absolute necessity."
