Santander, May 28, 2026. The president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, reported this morning on the progress of the remodeling work of the access control to the Maliaño docks with the placement of the ceramic pieces that will form the roof of the reinforced concrete canopy.
In total, 16,380 ceramic pieces are being installed, distributed in 91 rows of 180 pieces each, of which 6,552 units are brown, 4,750 are beige/sand, and 5,078 are white, and they are arranged in a pattern formed by three series of fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen randomly distributed elements.
Each piece has a regular hexagonal shape and has an edge length of 8.54 cm and an area of 190 cm2.
Díaz explained that the choice of colors "is not casual" as "we wanted to make a nod to other facades and coverings of historic port buildings such as the Pump House, the Tabacalera building, or the Palacete del Embarcadero."
The design of the roof, which, according to the president of the APS, "constitutes the most singular element of the new access control", was carried out by the FDA Arquitectos studio.
Once the placement of the ceramic pieces is completed, scheduled for mid-June, the dismantling of the formwork will begin, and the work will focus on the installation of the enclosures, which will be similar to the rest of the surrounding fencing, and the access control modules.
In addition, the opportunity will be taken to improve the urbanization of the access roundabout, as well as the junctions with Marqués de la Ensenada and Sotileza streets, continuing the work already carried out on Antonio López street.
The head of the Port recalled that the objective of the new access control to the Maliaño Docks and its surroundings, which is being carried out jointly with the Santander City Council and is part of the proposals included in the Permanent Port-City Forum, is "to combine citizen use with the preservation of the port's character, improving security, accessibility, and the representativeness that the only urban public access to the Port deserves."

The works, which are being carried out by the company Constructora Obras Públicas San Emeterio (Copsesa), involve an investment of 1,559,634 euros and have an execution period of ten months.
The remodeling, both of the vehicle access control to the Maliaño docks and the surrounding area, constitutes, according to Díaz, "an example of institutional collaboration", since it is tendered and executed by the Port Authority, but has financing from the Santander City Council, corresponding to 50% of the budget allocated to the urbanization of municipal land, which will amount to approximately 137,000 euros of the total works.
