The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) continues to advance its commitment to innovation and sustainability through its participation in the European project Renmarinas Demos, an initiative aimed at promoting research, development, and innovation in the field of marine renewable energies.
The objective of the plan is to favor the sustainable exploitation of clean energy sources in the maritime environment, contributing to decarbonization and improving the energy efficiency of the port sector.
Within the framework of this initiative, Valenciaport tendered the design, supply, and installation of two electrical energy evacuation systems, one from a floating photovoltaic plant connected to the medium voltage grid of the Port of Valencia and another from a wave energy plant linked to the medium voltage grid of the Port of Sagunto. The action has a budget of close to USD 2 million and an execution period of 11 months.
Renmarinas Demos, financed within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan Financed by the European Union–Next GenerationEU, through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), promotes the development of technologies linked to offshore wind, wave, tidal, and other renewable solutions applied to the maritime environment.
In addition to research and technological development, the initiative includes knowledge transfer actions, specialized training, collaboration between companies and research centers, as well as the implementation of demonstrator projects in real conditions.
With this action, Valenciaport continues to consolidate its energy transition and emissions reduction strategy, aligned with its Strategic Plan and with the objective of moving towards a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable port model. The incorporation of marine renewable energies reinforces the role of the ports of Valencia and Sagunto as spaces for applied innovation and a benchmark in sustainability within the European port system.
These actions are integrated into the Net Zero Emissions Plan with which Valenciaport seeks to lead the decarbonization of the ports of Valencia, Sagunto, and Gandía through the implementation of defined action plans for each subsector of the port community. In this sense, actions such as Renmarinas Demos play a relevant role.
Thus, the initiative contemplates the development of applied research and technological development projects in marine renewable energies, from conceptualization to prototype validation. This may include the study of new technologies, materials, energy storage systems, and integration methods into existing grids.
Likewise, it contemplates promoting collaboration between companies, research centers, universities, and public administrations at both national and international levels. The aim is to create synergies and knowledge networks that drive progress in this field.
