El Niño Reduces Ecuadorian Fisheries Exports in First Four Months
The Ecuadorian fishing sector recorded exports worth USD 721.5 million in the first four months of 2026, a 1.6% decrease compared to the previous year, according to the National Chamber of Fisheries (CNP). The El Niño phenomenon reduced skipjack tuna catches by 35% until April, while tuna loins and preserves fell by 6%. Warming waters and rising diesel prices exacerbated the contraction towards markets such as the European Union and China.
