The Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority has appointed Ilya Espino de Marotta as the new administrator of the Panama Canal for the 2026-2033 period, making her the first woman to lead the main interoceanic waterway for global maritime trade. The decision comes in a context of increasing demand for logistical efficiency, operational sustainability, and the strengthening of international supply chains.
Espino de Marotta is a marine engineer graduated from Texas A&M University and has a distinguished career of over 40 years within the Panama Canal, where she has held technical and leadership positions, including deputy administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer.
