An explosion aboard the chemical tanker Bergstraum caused a fire on the vessel south of the entrance to the Oslofjord in Norway. The fire was extinguished promptly, and there have been no reports of leakage of hazardous substances or injuries.
The incident occurred at around 3:45 pm local time on 28 July in an empty tank. There were 15 people aboard the vessel, which was also carrying a cargo of sulphuric acid in another tank. Reports indicate that the explosion was followed by a dense plume of smoke.
The crew worked to gain control of the situation, and a rescue vessel arrived on the scene in about 30 minutes. A rescue operation was quickly organised, with police boats, a helicopter and health services standing by.
The fire was extinguished by 5:22 pm. There have been no reports of any leakage of hazardous substances, and no injuries were reported among the crew.
The Bergstraum is a Norwegian-flagged chemical tanker built in 1996. The vessel is managed by Bergen-based Utkilen AS and owned by its subsidiary, Utkilen Shipping AS.
