SAAM Hunabku: First IMO Tier III Tugboat in Guatemala

SAAM Towage will incorporate the SAAM Hunabku tugboat into its fleet, the first with IMO Tier III technology to operate in Guatemala. The 16th vessel delivered by Sanmar Shipyards for the company will operate in Puerto Quetzal as part of the fleet renewal program promoted by the company in America.

Pablo Cáceres, SAAM Towage's Innovation and New Constructions Manager, highlighted that "the SAAM Hunabku will allow for more environmentally friendly operations in Puerto Quetzal, being the first IMO Tier III tugboat in Guatemala. This milestone reaffirms the path we have defined to advance in our sustainability strategy and reflects the value of the alliance we have built with Sanmar to achieve our objectives."

The IMO Tier III classification certifies that the engines comply with high international standards for controlling nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, contributing to a more efficient and environmentally friendly operation.

For his part, Rüchan Civgin, Sanmar Shipyards' Commercial Director, noted that the delivery "reflects the shared commitment of both companies to innovation, operational excellence, and the development of sustainable towing solutions to meet the needs of modern ports."

Belonging to the Bogaçay class and based on Robert Allan's RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design, the SAAM Hunabku stands out for its compact dimensions, 24.4 meters in length and 12 meters in beam, combined with high operational capacity. The vessel can reach 12.5 knots, has two CAT 3516E engines, more than 80 tons of bollard pull, a FiFi-1 firefighting system, double azimuthal propulsion (Z-drive), and capacity for a crew of up to seven people.
