Vertom Group announced the delivery of the MV Skretting Gro by Chowgule shipyards in India. As the fourth vessel in the shipping company's innovative series of 6,000 DWT diesel-electric short-sea vessels, following the MV Vertom Rita, the MV Vertom Rian, and the MV Jill C, this ship represents another step in its fleet renewal program. This vessel is also the first in the series dedicated to the long-term collaboration between the aquaculture feed company Skretting, Vertom, and Strand Shipping.
The 99-meter-long vessel features a rectangular dry cargo hold, optimized for flexible loading operations and maximum capacity. Its design combines efficient capacity with lower energy consumption, thanks to an optimized hull shape and a diesel-electric propulsion system.
By using four smaller generator sets instead of a conventional main engine, the vessel's energy load is distributed more efficiently and adjusted to the actual sailing profile. This allows the engines to operate closer to their maximum efficiency range, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and emissions, while maintaining excellent operational performance in the European short-sea shipping market.
The MV Skretting Gro was equipped with four bulkheads, further enhancing flexibility in cargo operations and making it suitable for transporting different types of goods. The vessel also features an improved shore power connection and a tank heating system, allowing for future-proof operations and the use of alternative fuels, such as biofuels.
The vessel will also be equipped with wind propulsion technology supplied by Econowind. The VentoFoils are scheduled to be installed in Brake, Germany, during the first week of August. These wind propulsion units harness wind conditions to generate additional thrust, contributing to reduced fuel consumption and emissions during navigation.
The collaboration with Skretting has further strengthened Vertom's focus on sustainable maritime transport solutions. This is the first vessel in the series dedicated to the triple alliance, within whose framework of cooperation, Vertom acts as shipowner and oversees the construction of the vessels, while Strand Shipping will manage the daily operation of the fleet, contributing its operational expertise and presence in the Scandinavian market.
Skretting's ambition to reduce the environmental impact of its supply chain prompted all partners to go beyond the original vessel design and collaborate on additional technologies that promote low-emission maritime logistics for the aquaculture industry.
Kühne+Nagel also played a fundamental role in bringing the parties together, laying the groundwork for this long-term cooperation. The MV Skretting Gro is, therefore, a tangible result of a shared commitment to building a more sustainable and future-proof transport solution in the aquaculture industry.
