Between 2027 and 2030, the Port of Motril will execute an Investment Plan that will mobilize 105 million dollars, which will allow for strategic actions to increase the port's operational capacity, improve its efficiency, and strengthen its position as a leading logistics hub in the Mediterranean.
Public investment will be allocated to the creation of a new logistics platform, the improvement of port infrastructures, the reinforcement of security and protection, the promotion of sustainability and energy efficiency, as well as various actions aimed at optimizing port operations.
Among the most relevant projects is the incorporation of a new 50,000 square meter logistics area, along with the construction of two new berths equipped with Ro-Ro ramps, an action that will expand the capacity of the Port of Motril to handle the growing cargo traffic with North Africa and reinforce its role as a strategic link between Europe and the African continent.
The Plan also includes various actions aimed at increasing the security of the port area by reinforcing the perimeter, improving cargo and passenger control and surveillance systems, as well as reorganizing internal flows to optimize mobility, reduce travel times, and streamline operations.
Sustainability is another major focus of the investment program. In this area, the electrification of all operational docks will be completed through the implementation of the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system, which will allow vessels to connect to the electrical grid during their stay in port and turn off their auxiliary engines, significantly reducing polluting emissions and noise.
After its implementation at the Levante and Costa docks, the system will now be extended to the Azucenas berths, intended for the movement of ferries and goods, and to the Dique dock, where it will serve large cruise ships. This action represents a significant advance in the decarbonization strategy of the Port of Motril and in meeting European energy transition objectives.
Also noteworthy in this section is the Green Motril project, a pioneering public-private collaboration initiative that will generate, store, and distribute, using renewable energies, all the electricity consumed in the port area, turning it into a true green energy island.
Environmental actions are completed with the installation of dust screens on the docks intended for the movement of solid bulk for export, a measure that will improve environmental quality and adds to the initiatives already implemented for the protection of port waters, seabeds, and biodiversity.
