Last Tuesday (June 2), PortosRio participated in the 8th edition of the Social Action for Artisanal Fishermen, held at the Rio de Janeiro Port Authority (CPRJ). The initiative benefited 100 fishermen and fisherwomen from Guanabara Bay, previously registered by fishing colonies and associations in the region.

Coordinated by CPRJ and carried out in partnership with PortosRio and various public and private institutions, the event aims to promote navigation safety, the safeguarding of human life at sea, and the prevention of water pollution, raising awareness among the fishing community about good practices at sea and the importance of regularizing their vessels.

Throughout the program, participants attended educational lectures on topics related to navigation safety and naval inspection. Among the subjects covered was the performance of the Port Guard, presented by the superintendent of the PortosRio Port Guard, Jorge Dantas, and by port technician Jesuino Alves.

The start of the Port Guard's maritime patrolling operations in Guanabara Bay has strengthened the safety of navigation, vessels, and people transiting the organized port area. The results of this action can be observed especially in the Cotunduba Channel, the main access for large ships to the Port of Rio de Janeiro, which has not registered any accidents in more than 250 maneuvers carried out since the beginning of night operations.

During the action, the vessels of the participating fishermen underwent inspections aimed at documentary regularization. The program also included medical care services, haircuts, and massage sessions.

Good practice guides for sea, produced by PortosRio, were also distributed, along with basic food baskets and safety and survival kits donated by partner companies.

Held since 2020, the Social Action has already benefited over 400 artisanal fishermen and fisherwomen from Guanabara Bay, consolidating itself as an important integration initiative between the Maritime Authority, the Port Authority, environmental agencies, the waterway community, and the private sector in favor of navigation safety, environmental protection, and the valorization of fishing activity.
