The National Confederation of Truck Owners of Chile (CNDC) warned that the current situation for trucks seeking to travel to Argentina is complex, due to the closure of border crossings in the central and southern zones because of adverse weather conditions in the Andes mountain range.
"The Confederation of Truck Owners of Chile reports that a complex situation is being experienced at border crossings with Argentina in the central and central-southern areas, due to the closures of these passes by storms, snowfalls, snow accumulation several meters high, and conditions that impose the interruption of trips," the organization stated.
According to the CNDC, the Cristo Redentor – Los Libertadores Integrated Border Complex remains completely closed and has been without traffic for 18 days, due to the heavy accumulation of snow in the high mountains. Road crews from Chile and Argentina are working to clear the road, but risks of rockfalls and avalanches persist, and there is still no definite date for reopening.
According to the confederation, the Pino Hachado La Araucanía pass is severely congested, mainly with trucks that opted for this southern crossing due to the closure of Los Libertadores. This pass normally handles between 150 and 180 trucks daily on average, but the accumulation of vehicles coming from the crossing located in the Valparaíso Region has increased the flow to 300. On Sunday, August 2, there were about 200 vehicles waiting to complete border procedures, and a parking area was enabled in Liucura to avoid further congestion at the border complex itself.
Meanwhile, at the Cardenal Samoré pass, truck traffic remains suspended at the request of Vialidad Argentina, with periodic evaluations being made, reported the Presidential Delegation of Osorno.
"Therefore, if the bad weather conditions at the border persist, a very costly alternative that generates significant lost days for trips is the Jama pass, on the border of the Second Region. Companies are advised to carefully evaluate cross-border trips, especially considering that Los Libertadores does not have a precise reopening date," indicated the CNDC.
