EU Weighs Expanding Aspides Mission to Lead Hormuz Mine-Clearing Effort

The European Union has proposed expanding its Aspides naval mission to take the primary role in clearing mines in the Strait of Hormuz as part of a Franco-British-led initiative. Around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass through the key waterway, which effectively closed after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. The change would require unanimity among the EU's 27 member states.
