The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) invested more than 15 thousand dollars during the first half of 2026 in maintenance, repair, and strengthening of the infrastructure of Puerto Mutis, in the province of Veraguas, as part of a recovery plan aimed at improving the safety, operability, and service capacity of this maritime terminal.
Víctor Zamora, Deputy Director of Ports of the AMP, highlighted that the institution maintains permanent investments in Puerto Mutis and announced that in the coming weeks, reflector lights and navigation aid signaling will be installed for the port's access channel.
The AMP, along with Veraguas authorities, held a meeting with artisanal fishermen, boatmen, tourism operators, and other port users to listen to their concerns and promote initiatives aimed at the sustainable maritime development of the area.
"We are aware that maritime development is built by listening to communities and working together to respond to their needs," said the Deputy Director of Ports.
During the meeting, which was attended by more than 500 people, including residents and fishermen from the area, the institution reiterated its commitment to continue promoting safer, more functional port infrastructures at the service of the communities that drive the region's economy.
Edilsa Marín, a member of the Puerto Mutis Fishermen's Association, highlighted that the meeting was productive as they were able to present the main needs of the sector to the authorities. The community leader acknowledged the work being carried out by the AMP on two docks and at the same time requested the repair of others, which would be of great help in allowing larger vessels to pass.
Puerto Mutis has consolidated itself as a strategic point for fishing, tourism, and logistics activities in the Gulf of Montijo, serving as a link to Coiba National Park and the islands of Cébaco, Gobernadora, and Leones.
So far in 2026, the AMP has handled 630 departures corresponding to 360 vessels dedicated to artisanal fishing, scientific research, cargo transport, passenger transport, and maritime tourism. The figures indicate that there have been 129 embarkations with 519 passengers and 91 disembarkations of 627 passengers.
Regarding fish movement, the port has registered 1,565,690 pounds unloaded during 2026.
Puerto Mutis also plays a decisive role in national commercial connectivity. During the closures registered on the Inter-American Highway in 2025, the port terminal became a strategic logistical link for the transfer of products, goods, and food from Chiriquí destined for Panama City.
Four port structures operate in the Veraguas port. Two are directly managed by the AMP, and the remaining ones operate under temporary occupation permits granted to private operators, in accordance with current administrative provisions.
The dock directly benefits residents of the Costa Hermosa district and indirectly multiple coastal and island communities linked to the Gulf of Montijo, in addition to boosting the regional economy and serving as a logistical and commercial link for sectors such as Bahía Honda, Santa Catalina, and Mariato.
