The South African state-owned transport and logistics company Transnet reported a 9% year-on-year increase in vessel traffic. The company stated that a total of 8,630 arrivals were recorded during the 2025/2026 financial year, exceeding the 7,912 of the previous period.
According to the state-owned company on its website, "the increase in the number of vessel calls reflects improved operational coordination across the port system, driven by closer collaboration between the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and terminal operators, and increased port efficiency."
Furthermore, it was detailed that "the volume of cargo handled at TNPA's eight commercial ports increased by 4.2%, reaching approximately 304 million tons, representing the largest growth since the 2011/12 financial year."
Regarding the most prominent activities, it was indicated that "the volume of operations in the automotive sector led the recovery with double-digit growth of 13.3%, and the Port of Durban exceeded its performance targets."
"As for containers, they also experienced strong growth, increasing by 7.1% and exceeding annual budget forecasts by 3.6%, largely driven by a 22% increase in citrus volume. Dry bulk cargo volume increased by 4.2%, primarily driven by export demand for chrome ore, magnetite, and manganese commodities," the publication added.
In this regard, Transnet Group Chief Executive Michelle Phillips stated that "the strong overall growth performance indicates an improvement in the national economic landscape, including benefits derived from recovery initiatives and improvements in port and rail efficiency," the official concluded.
