The World Economic Forum (WEF) unveiled its new selection of global "Lighthouse Factories," an acknowledgment obtained by Qingdao CIMC Reefer Container Manufacture. With this milestone, the plant becomes the only one in the CIMC Group and the first in the global container industry to receive such a distinction.
According to company executives, this milestone in intelligent manufacturing demonstrates CIMC's commitment to meeting the needs of global trade and daily life with highly efficient and reliable cold chain equipment.
The network of "Lighthouse Factories," jointly driven by the World Economic Forum and McKinsey & Company, is widely recognized as the benchmark in digital transformation and intelligent manufacturing modernization.
Its objective is to identify advanced manufacturers that are pioneers in the large-scale deployment of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, generating significant economic benefits and operational transformations. To date, there are only 238 such factories worldwide.
Kiva Allgood, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, noted that the latest generation of "Lighthouse Factories" demonstrates how intelligence can be deeply integrated into every aspect of operations. This integration, she explained, allows companies to respond more quickly, engage in continuous learning, and achieve superior performance levels across the entire value chain.
In her mention of Qingdao Reefer Container, Allgood stated that "the increasing volatility of global trade, coupled with the growing demand for thermal insulation and product durability, has challenged traditional manufacturing paradigms for refrigerated containers in global cold chain logistics. By implementing more than 50 digital applications and artificial intelligence-based solutions to optimize resource allocation and production workflows, the plant has shortened its manufacturing cycle by 32% and reduced its defect rate by 47%."
These metrics are supported by a fundamental improvement in Qingdao Reefer Container's manufacturing ecosystem, a shift from an experience-based approach to a data-driven one, and a transition from optimizing individual machines to system-wide synergy. This evolution has made refrigerated container production more efficient and consistent, ensuring that fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and essential supplies reach their destination more safely and reliably.
This latest recognition reflects CIMC's continuous drive to execute its technological innovation strategy. Pan Jinjie, CIO of CIMC Group, assured that in recent years, the conglomerate has focused on building a "digital and intelligent CIMC" by implementing digital technologies, intelligent equipment, industrial internet, artificial intelligence, and sustainable manufacturing in an ever-increasing range of scenarios.
The executive emphasized that CIMC has consistently cultivated a portfolio of world-leading products, which inherently require the support of advanced production lines to safeguard their leadership position.
Currently, CIMC has established a "National Intelligent Manufacturing Demonstration Factory," two "National Excellence Level Intelligent Factories," and eight "National 5G Factories." Advanced manufacturing capabilities are rapidly emerging as a new growth engine for the Group.
Obtaining the "Lighthouse Factories" distinction, Pan Jinjie added, will further drive CIMC to expand its expertise in digital and intelligent manufacturing to other business segments, continuously elevating its advanced manufacturing capability across the corporation.
Nian Junlai, Vice President of CIMC Container Group and General Manager of Qingdao Reefer Container, affirmed that the plant will leverage its new status as a global "Lighthouse Factory" as a launchpad. By accelerating the application of AI, intelligent manufacturing, and automation technologies, the company seeks to harness the model's potential to drive global container manufacturing to new heights.
