Contship takes another step towards decarbonization with the introduction of the first all-electric port tractor at the La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT).
The new vehicle will be operated by Hannibal for internal transport within the terminal, as part of a pilot project aimed at promoting the progressive electrification of the quay tractor fleet and reducing direct emissions (Scope 1) generated by port operations.
The use of electric tractors is particularly suitable for terminal environments: operations are carried out close to the charging infrastructure, while the high frequency of starts and stops maximizes the benefits of regenerative braking. The zero-emission unit also ensures optimized energy consumption during container handling maneuvers. Furthermore, the reduction of noise and vibrations contributes to safer and more comfortable working conditions, improving both productivity and operational quality.
The investment was co-financed within the framework of the PNRR Green Ports program, through a specific call for proposals promoted and managed by the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea. This initiative is part of the broader Green Ports program: renewable energies and energy efficiency measures in ports, funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds, whose objective is to reduce CO? emissions and improve air quality in port areas.
"The energy transition program we have launched aims to decarbonize port activities. Specifically, the Authority has made its experience in managing PNRR funds available to terminal operators, thus allowing them to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Green Ports initiative for the benefit of the port system," commented Simone Pacciardi, Head of EU Relations, EU Project Management and PNRR Funds at the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea.
This initiative is part of Contship's broader roadmap for technological innovation and sustainability at the La Spezia terminal, which includes the digitalization of processes, infrastructure development, and equipment modernization with the aim of maximizing operational efficiency in all areas.
