The private security team of a tanker repelled with warning shots the approach of a small boat with five people on board. The incident occurred 98 nautical miles north of Socotra, a Yemeni archipelago in the Indian Ocean located between the Gulf of Aden, the Guardafui Channel, and the Arabian Sea.
"UK Maritime Trade Operations has received a report of an incident 98 nautical miles north of Socotra. The company protection officer of a tanker has confirmed that the vessel was approached by a small boat with five people on board," UKMTO reported.
"The vessel's armed security team fired warning shots at the small boat, forcing it to change course. Authorities are investigating the case," it added.
Although the incident was reported through the official report cataloged under reference 059-26, the identity and flag of the tanker were not revealed.
While the alert does not directly attribute the action to piracy groups operating in the region, this type of incident is usually framed within prevention protocols against assaults on commercial vessels in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
Following the incident, UKMTO has issued a formal recommendation advising all vessels sailing in the area to do so with extreme caution, and urging them to immediately report any suspicious activity.
