Peru has completed the internal procedures for the entry into force of the Protocol for the Optimization of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China, following the recent ratification of this instrument, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported today, highlighting that the measure will strengthen the economic and commercial relationship between both countries.
The ratification was formalized by Supreme Decree 035-2026-RE, published on July 25, 2026. This concludes the necessary internal legal procedures for its upcoming entry into force.
The FTA Optimization Protocol contemplates the modernization of existing chapters, as well as the inclusion of new chapters. The topics negotiated within the framework of the optimization seek to facilitate foreign trade operations, strengthen customs cooperation, incorporate provisions on the digital economy, and establish a framework that promotes greater Chinese investment in Peru.
Mincetur affirmed that, as an important trading partner, it is necessary to have a modern FTA that responds to the needs of economic operators. The optimization of the Peru-China FTA updates and strengthens the economic and commercial relationship with China, creating more opportunities to benefit MSMEs and attract greater Chinese investment.
The Protocol for the Optimization of the Peru-China Free Trade Agreement was signed on November 14, 2024, in Lima, during the state visit to Peru by the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, on the occasion of the APEC summit hosted by our country.
China is Peru's top trading partner, representing 35% of our trade.
In 2025, Peruvian exports to China reached 10.748 billion dollars. Non-traditional exports accounted for 4%, showing a growth of 141% compared to 2024.
Likewise, in 2025, Peruvian imports from China amounted to 17.847 billion dollars, reaching a record figure, driven by increased purchases in the automotive industry, steel, chemicals, various goods, and IT.
