Paita Positions Itself as the New Petrochemical Hub of Northern Peru

The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reaffirmed its commitment to transform Paita, in the Piura region, into a new petrochemical hub for the country, following a meeting between the sector's head, Waldir Ayasta, and the regional governor, Luis Neyra. The meeting addressed the scope of the recent declaration of this area for the development of a petrochemical complex.

During the meeting, the minister stated that the declaration of Paita as a Determined Geographical Zone, established by Ministerial Resolution N.° 278-2026-MINEM/DM, represents the first signal from the State to promote a strategic project aimed at industrializing northern natural gas and generating greater added value for the country.

For his part, the regional governor maintained that the development of the petrochemical industry will strengthen Piura's agriculture through the production of fertilizers, in addition to promoting job creation and new development opportunities for the population of the northern part of the country.

Ayasta reaffirmed Minem's commitment to work in an articulated manner with the Regional Government of Piura and other executive entities to develop a roadmap that will make the project viable and advance the productive transformation of the region.

At the end of June, the sector estimated that this initiative could attract investments exceeding 1 billion dollars.

The project adds to the efforts the State has been promoting to develop the petrochemical industry in the country. In recent years, the so-called southern petrochemical hub, based on the use of Camisea natural gas, has been presented as one of the strategic projects to promote industrialization, while now the Government seeks to develop a second growth axis in the north, taking advantage of gas resources and Paita's logistical infrastructure.
