The Ministry of Production has ordered a new temporary suspension of anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) extractive activity for an additional period of 15 days, as part of adaptive management measures aimed at protecting the sustainability of the resource in the face of persistent warm oceanographic conditions associated with the development of El Niño Costero 2026.
The measure is effective from 00:00 hours on May 27 to 23:59 hours on June 10, 2026, in the area between 06°00'S and 14°00'S within 30 nautical miles, in accordance with Directorial Resolution N.° 00060-2026-Produce/DGSFS-PA.
The decision was adopted based on the technical recommendation of the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe), an entity that warned of the persistence and intensification of warm conditions on the Peruvian coast.
Produce stated that these conditions could modify the availability and distribution of anchovy, as well as increase the vulnerability of juvenile specimens to capture, a scenario that requires maintaining a precautionary approach to protect recruitment and stock renewal.
"This new temporary suspension seeks to reduce extractive pressure on areas with a high incidence of juvenile anchovy and prevent the fleet from concentrating its operations in vulnerable areas," it noted.
It considered that this measure allows for the natural redistribution of shoals and reorients fishing effort towards areas with less presence of juveniles.
In this way, it stated, incidental capture is drastically reduced, and the precautionary approach in resource management is reinforced, fully supported by Imarpe's scientific monitoring.
"Anchovy management in Peru is based on scientific evidence and adaptive management that allows us to act in a timely and responsible manner to protect the resource and ensure its sustainability," said the Minister of Production, César Quispe Luján.
In this context, he continued, the temporary suspension of extractive activities seeks to safeguard the available biomass, protect the species' renewal process, and guarantee the sustainability of the fishery.
"These preventive measures seek to protect the species' renewal process and ensure the sustainability of a key strategic activity for the country, based on scientific information, applying technical criteria, and with permanent monitoring for responsible fishing," added the head of Produce.
He pointed out that Peru's current fisheries management model allows for focalized and temporary closures based on permanent biological and oceanographic monitoring carried out by Imarpe, strengthening the response capacity to climate variability and ensuring sustainable use of the country's main fishery resource.
Finally, he highlighted that Imarpe recently obtained ISO 9001:2015 international certification granted by the auditor SGS, a recognition that endorses the quality, traceability, and reliability of its scientific processes linked to biomass estimation and biological sampling of anchovy, strengthening the technical basis for fisheries management decisions adopted by the Peruvian State.
