The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through the National Port Authority (APN), granted port authorization to the company Horizonte de Verano S.A.C. to develop Peru's first green hydrogen port terminal. The project will be executed in the Majes district (Arequipa) and will require an investment of US$ 540 million.
This infrastructure, in its first stage, consists of two single-buoy moorings and underwater pipelines; it also includes a maritime terminal with an ammonia storage system located on the coast.
The facility will feature thermally insulated tanks to store this compound at cryogenic temperatures, as well as a system of submarine pipelines for supplying ammonia to tanker vessels and a desalination plant.
The comprehensive project includes a plant that will produce green hydrogen and ammonia. The key difference of this compound compared to that obtained from hydrocarbons is that it is derived from seawater and air, with no CO2 emissions during its use. Renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, will be used for its production.
The initiative will be executed in five stages, with US$ 120 million allocated to phase I, which is expected to begin operations by the end of 2029.
With this authorization, the MTC continues to promote strategic investments that strengthen the modernization of the National Port System, boost the country's logistical competitiveness, and foster the development of port infrastructure aligned with the challenges of sustainability and economic growth.
