DP World Allocates US$100 Million for Shore Power at Callao Port

DP World allocated an additional and voluntary investment to implement the Shore Power system at the South Pier of Callao Port, as part of the more than US$100 million earmarked for its decarbonization strategy, which will allow container ships to connect to the electrical grid while docked.

Peru leads in port services with new DP World investment

With this infrastructure, DP World Callao becomes the first port terminal in Latin America to offer this technology for container ships using electrical energy from 100% renewable sources, certified by I-REC.

The system's inauguration was attended by the President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori; the Minister of Transport and Communications, Rafael Rey Rey; Tiemen Meester, Global Chief Operating Officer of Ports and Terminals at DP World; Morten Johansen, Executive Vice President of Ports and Terminals Operations for the Americas at DP World; Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia; and Javier Moreira Calderón, General Manager of CMA CGM, among other executives.

During the ceremony, the first CMA CGM vessel to use the Shore Power system at DP World Callao, the CMA CGM PLATINUM, was connected. It has a capacity of 13,100 TEU, a length of 335 meters, and a methanol-ready design. The vessel was built in 2025.

The implementation of the system adds to the nearly US$1 billion invested by DP World in Peru during its 20 years of operations and is part of initiatives aimed at incorporating sustainable solutions into its port activities.

Furthermore, DP World is considering additional investments of over US$1.3 billion to continue strengthening infrastructure and expand the capacity of the South Pier to more than 4.3 million TEU annually, in response to the growth of Peruvian foreign trade.

Environmental Impact

The Shore Power system allows compatible vessels to connect to the electrical grid from land while docked, replacing the use of their auxiliary engines and reducing fuel consumption and emissions during their stay in port.

Currently, approximately 80% of the vessels arriving at Pier 3 of DP World Callao have systems compatible with this technology, which will facilitate its adoption from the start of operations.

The system will prevent the emission of over 6,300 tons of CO2e annually and reduce by more than 90% the emissions of NOx, SOx, and particulate matter generated by auxiliary engines during vessels' stay in port.

It will also contribute to reducing noise pollution and improving air quality in Callao.
