The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is advancing its energy transition strategy through an alliance with the European Union and the Port of Algeciras, within the framework of the Global Gateway initiative. The project includes the development of a decarbonization roadmap and feasibility studies to strengthen maritime connectivity through an energy and digital corridor between both regions.
Preliminary studies indicate that this initiative could contribute to a significant reduction in emissions associated with maritime transport. In parallel, representatives from Panama, Colombia, and Spain are participating in technical exchanges on port electrification, energy efficiency, and new solutions to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable port operations.
The ACP also promotes programs such as Net Zero Slot, aimed at incentivizing the transit of vessels with lower environmental impact technologies. These actions reflect the growing incorporation of sustainability criteria in the management of strategic infrastructure, maritime transport, and international logistics chains, a trend that is also relevant for ports and foreign trade actors in Ecuador and the region.
