The Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Panama Canal announce that, starting next July 30, 2026, families who use the El Limón cemetery in the Chagres district will be able to use the Los Cedros cemetery, located in the La Encantada corregimiento, Chagres district, Colón province, for new burials.
This measure responds to the provisions of Executive Decree 26, published in the Official Gazette on July 21, 2026, which orders the cessation of new burials in the El Limón cemetery as of July 30, 2026, within the framework of the development of the project for the creation of the Río Indio lake, declared of public interest.
According to the Executive Decree, Minsa and the Panama Canal will coordinate with families and local authorities to provide the necessary guidance and support during this transition.
Executive Decree also establishes January 15, 2027, as the deadline for burials in cemeteries located in Las Quebradas, Boca de Uracillo, Palma Real, Los Cajoncitos, San Cristóbal, Tres Hermanas, and Los Uveros, all located within the Río Indio lake project area.
The new burial sites that will serve these communities will be announced in due course, once coordination with the communities and competent authorities is concluded, as well as the habilitation of the cemeteries, ensuring that they comply with sanitary regulations and respond to the needs, customs, and community ties of the families.
Any subsequent process of exhumation and transfer of remains will be previously coordinated with family members, with respect for their religious beliefs, cultural roots, and emotional ties.
This decision is part of a progressive process that will continue to develop through dialogue, consultation, and participation of the communities in the Río Indio basin.
