The National Maritime Association of Panama (Mapa) highlighted the appointment of Ilya Espino de Marotta as the new administrator of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), making her the first woman to hold the position since the waterway came under Panamanian control.
In a statement, the organization expressed "its most sincere congratulations to Eng. Ilya Espino de Marotta on her appointment as Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, becoming the first woman to hold this important position since the transfer of the interoceanic waterway to Panamanian hands 26 years ago."
"Engineer Espino de Marotta's professional career, with four decades of service at the ACP, represents an example of commitment, technical knowledge, leadership, and a deep understanding of canal operations and the strategic challenges of the national maritime and logistics sector. Her experience in different areas of the organization and her participation in fundamental projects for the development and modernization of the Canal provide confidence in the continuity of solid and visionary management," Mapa emphasized.
"Mapa also recognizes the ACP Board of Directors for conducting this selection process in a professional, transparent, and institutional manner, strengthening confidence in one of the country's most important and emblematic entities," the organization added.
"Likewise, we extend recognition to Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales for his leadership and extraordinary contributions during his administration, a period in which the canal continued to consolidate its strategic relevance for Panama and international maritime trade, also facing significant operational and climatic challenges with responsibility and a long-term vision," they noted.
"From Mapa, we reiterate our willingness to continue collaborating, from the maritime and logistics sector, in efforts aimed at strengthening Panama's competitiveness, sustainability, and positioning as a world-class maritime and logistics hub," the association assured.
