The Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar) began operational tests of the AUV 535 autonomous underwater vehicle on Santa Cruz Island, which will replace the AUV 614 in monitoring ocean conditions. The incorporation of this technology will strengthen the monitoring of the El Niño phenomenon in Ecuadorian waters and expand national marine observation capabilities.
The AUV 535 will continuously collect information on variations beneath the ocean surface, providing data for the analysis of oceanographic and climatic conditions that affect various productive activities. Once the tests are concluded, the equipment will be installed in the Hermandad Marine Reserve, where it will support the scientific research and permanent monitoring carried out by Inocar.
Permanent monitoring of ocean conditions represents a key component for risk management in the maritime sector. Having timely information facilitates decision-making in the port, fishing, and logistics sectors, helping to reduce the impact of climatic events on maritime transport and foreign trade operations, while strengthening the country's response capacity to climate variability scenarios.
