In a new boost to the export of ornamental products, the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) supervised the phytosanitary certification of a shipment of 19,593 amaryllis bulbs – with a total weight of 15.2 tons – from Cañete (Lima) destined for the United States.
This is the first shipment of waxed amaryllis bulbs to the United States under the phytosanitary pre-shipment system, "a mechanism that allows inspections required by US health authorities to be carried out in Peruvian territory before the cargo departs."
The new procedure, approved in May 2026 by the United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), allows the phytosanitary inspections required for these shipments to be carried out in Peru before their departure.
Previously, exporters had to face additional processes and a phytosanitary inspection at the US port of entry, which could generate higher costs and logistical times, explained Senasa, an entity attached to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).
With the pre-shipment system, APHIS inspectors "verify compliance with phytosanitary requirements in Peruvian territory, facilitating a more agile entry of ornamental products into the North American market."
This result is the fruit of sustained technical work between Senasa and the US health authorities, which allows us to continue strengthening confidence in Peruvian production, highlighted the head of Senasa, Vilma Gutarra García.
The main international markets for Peruvian amaryllis bulbs are currently the Netherlands, the United States, China, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Chile, and Norway.
The growth of this activity also generates employment opportunities and boosts the local economy, especially in producing areas, due to the different stages involved in the value chain.
The stages include the cultivation, selection, processing, waxing, and painting of the bulbs, in addition to the conditioning, packaging, and preparation of the products for export, Senasa detailed in a press release.
The supervision activity was attended by the institutional head of Senasa and the general director of Export Promotion at Promperú, Ricardo Limo.
