Baleària Canarias has incorporated the roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel with the largest historical capacity for goods transport in the archipelago. The Josefina de la Torre, with a capacity for 4,000 linear meters of cargo, significantly increases the weekly capacity for transporting goods from the islands to the Port of Cadiz.
On routes from the peninsula, the shipping company also operates with another exclusive cargo vessel, the Villa de Tazacorte, as well as with the passenger and cargo ferry Volcán de Tinamar. Thus, Baleària Canarias will connect Cadiz with Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria three times a week and twice with Santa Cruz de La Palma and Arrecife.
The president of the shipping company, Adolfo Utor, stated that "with this service schedule and the incorporation of this high-capacity vessel, Baleària Canarias's position as a leading operator in roll-on/roll-off cargo transport is consolidated, and as the main shipping company in the primary sector, guaranteeing a reliable and sufficient offer for Canarian fruit and vegetable exports, especially bananas and tomatoes."
The new vessel Josefina de la Torre, built in 2023 and with a capacity for 280 trucks, provides capacity, technology, and energy efficiency. With a length of 209 meters, it is also the vessel with the highest number of refrigerated cargo units that has operated in the Canary Islands, as the electrical outlets have been increased to 230 to guarantee the refrigeration of agri-food and perishable products.
This exclusive cargo vessel will provide weekly service to Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria. The vessel's name is a tribute to Josefina de la Torre, a member of the Generation of '27, and one of the most multifaceted and unique figures in Canarian literature and arts of the 20th century.
For its part, the other vessel dedicated to goods transport, the Villa de Tazacorte, operates a weekly service from Cadiz with Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and La Palma.
Regarding combined cargo and passenger services, Baleària Canarias has expanded its connections between Cadiz and the archipelago to guarantee territorial connectivity and reinforce passenger mobility between the peninsula and the islands. The ferry Volcán de Tinamar offers a weekly connection to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote, departing on Tuesdays on the Cadiz-Arrecife-Las Palmas de Gran Canaria route, and on Saturdays between the peninsula and the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
